Plant-led rituals for modern life

Mantra exists in relationship; with plants, people, culture and the environments that hold them.
This page outlines the principles that guide how we source, speak about and work with plant allies. It is not a set of claims, but a framework of care.
Working with plants responsibly
Plants are not raw materials to be extracted without context. They are living systems with cultural, ecological and historical significance.
At Mantra, we work with plants in a way that prioritises respect over scale. This includes careful consideration of sourcing, formulation and the language we use to describe what plants can and cannot do.
Where possible, we choose ingredients that can be cultivated sustainably and avoid contributing to unnecessary pressure on wild populations.
Honouring lineage and context
Many of the plants we work with carry deep cultural histories.
Some are rooted in Indigenous knowledge systems. Others are held through ceremonial or intergenerational practice. We acknowledge that these lineages matter and should not be reduced to trends or marketing narratives.
Mantra does not claim ownership over traditional knowledge. We aim to reference plants with humility, credit cultural origins where appropriate and avoid language that strips plants of their context.
Science, tradition and honesty
Modern research offers valuable insight, but it is not the only form of knowing. Some of the plants we work with have a growing body of human research. Others are supported primarily by traditional use and lived experience. We believe it is ethical to be clear about this distinction.
Where research exists, we link to it. Where evidence is still emerging or limited, we say so. We do not overstate findings or imply outcomes that research does not support.
Transparency builds trust. We choose it even when it means being more measured.
Why our language matters
Words shape expectations.
Mantra avoids language that frames plants as cures, fixes or guarantees. We do not promise outcomes or position our offerings as medical interventions.
Our language reflects relationship rather than result, and support rather than certainty. This is a deliberate ethical choice.
Care, context and responsibility
Some plants worked with by Mantra are psychoactive or sit at the edges of contemporary legal and cultural frameworks.
We approach these plants with heightened care. This includes contextual education, conservative language and clear boundaries around what we do and do not offer.
We believe altered states deserve respect, preparation and informed choice; not trivialisation or pressure.
Stewardship in practice
Mantra is guided by founder Cat Anderson, whose work spans plant medicine facilitation, research engagement and advocacy in South Africa.
Cat remains closely involved in shaping the ethical direction of the brand, ensuring that decisions around plants, language and positioning are aligned with values of care, responsibility and restraint.
This stewardship is ongoing, not static. It evolves as research grows, conversations deepen and contexts change.
Listening as part of integrity
Engaging with Experts
Mantra is shaped through dialogue with practitioners, growers, researchers, facilitators and community members.
Openness to Learning
We remain open to learning, correction, and refinement as part of ethical practice.
Respecting Modern Contexts
We prioritise care in how plant medicines are held and shared in contemporary settings.
Stewardship is not a marketing position; it is a responsibility. Mantra exists to hold that responsibility with care, humility, and ongoing attention.
Stay close to the ritual
Occasional notes on plants, practice and what we are learning along the way. No noise. No pressure. Just thoughtful, poignantly-timed sharing.
